Each of the pieces in Matt’s shop is individually made, assembled and finished.Â
I first discovered woodworking as a teenager growing up in Coventry, England. For my High School work experience I was sent to a small workshop that supported disabled and disadvantaged adults called Ellys Woodcraft.
It had such a good feeling to working not only with the tools but all of the leaners at the center. We made simple projects for local schools and parks, and I remember how immensely proud the leaners were when a project came together. After my work experience I continued on at Ellys Woodcraft and by 14 years old, I was teaching tool safety and helping run projects and deliver proposals.Â
After graduation I went into Accounting and Finance, but woodworking never really left. It’s always been the one area that feels comfortable allowing me to unleash my creativity.
I moved to the United States in 2008, right after finishing my professional qualifications in Accounting and IT networking training. It was huge cultural change, and I didn’t have a perfect plan, but I was ready for something new. Once I settled in, I continued working in Finance and eventually went back to school to study General Sciences and Computer Engineering. I’ve love problem solving and continuing education and they have been a driving force behind my designs in the shop.
Life really came together when I met my wife. Before long, we had a full, lively house with five boys, two dogs, two guinea pigs, two leopard tortoises, and a ball python. There’s always something happening, and someone always needs help fixing or building something. The workshop became my place to slow down, reset, and stay connected to the craft that’s been part of my life since those early days back in England.
Humphries & Sons didn’t start as a business idea at all. It grew out of my crazy everyday life. Most of my projects begin with one of the boys, my wife, or a friend asking if I can make something specific. Or rather, “I bet Matt/my Dad could make that for you!” I enjoy figuring things out, sketching ideas, and using the skills I’ve picked up over nearly thirty years of woodworking.
After a while some of those pieces ended up on Etsy, and slowly the shop took on a life of its own. I’ve always been drawn to traditional designs from different cultures, whether it’s German Rauchermann smokers, Erzgebirge‑style nativities, Scottish Highland cows, or Norwegian Nisse figures and try whenever possible to allow those traditions to be present in my work .Â
There’s no better feeling for me than making an heirloom‑quality piece that becomes part of a family’s traditions and gets passed down with pride.
Matt works on his trusty ShopFox lathe using traditional Crown turning tools from England to create the pieces below.
After carefully designing pieces, Matt then uses his XTOOL P2 laser along with his ONEfinity CNC machine to produce the following work.
